Username, account name or log-in
name are all basically the same. This is a unique name that is also used at the
start of your email address. This is an important key to your internet access.
It is normally entered in lowercase.
A password is a unique code
used together with your username. To access your account you must enter your
password (usually in lower case) after entering your user name. It is similar to
a PIN number used to access a bank account through an ATM. An example of a good
password is pen56ink.
Email is an internet
concept that lets you send messages or small files to other people who have
access to their own email account. It uses the same principals and conventions
as ordinary everyday mail ("snail-mail"). For instance, an email address is the
equivalent to your home postal address. Each address is unique, which ensures
that the message finds its desired destination. One email address comes free
with your internet connection. It's a small world with email! Your email address
at Megalink is you@megalink.com.au.
An attachment is like a
photo in a letter. An attachment in email can also be a photo or a picture
attached to your email. If an email has an attachment on it you will receive
some sort of indication on the email. This can vary depending on the mail
package in use. Some packages use a paper clip symbol to let you know that a
message has an attachment.

Transfer Protocol. You use it to upload and download files to/from a web server.

URL = Uniform Resource
Locator
A URL is a way of locating HTML
files on the Internet. In other words it's just another acronym for a web page
address.
This type of problem is not
unusual, first check to make sure that you are typing in your login and password
correctly. Ensure that the CAPS LOCK key is OFF so that you entry is made in
lowercase. Windows computers are case sensitive. Another solution that often
works is to remove your access codes and start again. Simply click in the login
and password fields and remove them, hit backspace a couple of times and retype
them.
The URL
itself may be incomplete or incorrect, so check that you have typed it into the
Location bar correctly. Otherwise, the page or information that the URL is
pointing to may have been moved or possibly deleted. If you are sure you typed
the URL correctly, and it is important to you to follow it up, you should
contact the person in charge of that URL. If you can access other sites, the
problem will not be with your computer.
No, your computer can not catch a
virus by viewing a web page, even if it has graphics, or plays movies, sound, or
3D files However, if you download a new program or application AND run it, you
are exposed to the same risk you would be in running any new program. To be
safe, make sure that you know WHAT you are downloading and ALWAYS have a virus
scanner running. Recently, some viruses have been sent to unsuspecting users via
emails. Here the best method is prevention, so a good rule of thumb is: DO NOT
open an attachment on an email if you do not know the source of the email.
-
check that your telephone line
is plugged properly into your modem connection.
-
use a normal telephone to test
the line. Plug a standard phone into the phone jack on the wall and listen for
a dial tone. If you do not hear a dial tone, you may want to contact your
phone service provider.
-
check that the modem has been
installed and configured properly for your machine. To do this, open My
Computer, Control Panel and then double-click the modem icon. You may need to
remove and re-install the software driver for your modem.
-
contact us for help if these
steps don't resolve the problem.
The file is in a compressed form
so it doesn't take as long to send across the Internet. You need to use a
program to "decompress" or expand the file so that it is usable again. For .zip
files, a popular utility is Winzip. Click
here to
download it.
Try to find any other programs
which may be using your modem, such as fax software. One way to do this is to
press
Control+Alt+Delete keys together, which will bring up the Windows Task
Manager. You can then see a list of all running programs - some programs run in
the background, and can't be closed normally. (Note: Don't use that key
combination more than once or it will signal Windows to restart your computer.)
You will probably need to close them before you dial in to your account. If the
problem persists after closing the applications, restart your computer and
attempt to dial in once more.
The best way to disconnect from
